Light is enchanting; attracting our vision, delighting our imagination and emotions, and charming and fascinating us. This exhibition features the enchanted light of 12th c. Cistercian abbeys in France and 18th c. historic structures of New England.
The black-and-white image is about light: the energy by which a photographic image is produced. Light awakens us to the beauty of objects and the moods of landscapes. As an abstraction of the real world, the black-and-white photograph creates a distinctive world of imagination – of luminosity and elegance – that provides the viewer with an exceptional aesthetic and emotional experience and a unique vision of that world.
In my photographs, I seek to capture the light and the quiet beauty, mystery, and spirit of the places I visit; to convey and share with others my impressions and visions; and to help viewers discover the often-overlooked beauty and significance of place. I seek not to imitate what I see but to play with it, to create my own unique version. As a unique creative medium and expressive art form, photography is a shared process of discovery: for the photographer, in terms of what a photograph is capable of yielding in expressive possibilities; for the viewer, in terms of enhanced creativity in interpretation.
I create classic black-and-white fine-art photographs with large-format view cameras, which allow me to change the point of view, plane of focus and even the shape of the objects being photographed. Through control of the unique optical and tonal qualities of the photographic medium, I can reveal the subtle detail, depth, and tonal variations of the image. To provide the fullest possible expressive possibilities and best convey my concept and vision, I carefully handcraft all my own work, using traditional darkroom techniques. The photographs are printed on select fiber-based silver gelatin papers that are selenium toned and treated for longevity.
