Newburyport Art Association
9th Annual Members’ Juried Photography and Sculpture Show
|
August 18 to September 17, 2006
Photographic Based Media and Sculpture
Sargent and Hartson Galleries
There were 192 entries from 109 artists. There were 125 Photographs and 17 sculptures accepted.
Phil Chura juried the Photography. He is a PPA Certified Professional Photographer, teacher, and lecturer. Mr. Chura received his certification after meeting rigorous requirements measuring his artistic, technical and business competence. The PPA Certified designation is held by fewer than 2,500 photographer's world wide. Mr. Chura’s overall comments on the show: “Very difficult to judge. Print quality overall-excellence. Biggest problem some photographer’s not using tri-pod (handholding) made some of the images a little soft. Some artists need to use a tripod to slow shutter speed to increase depth of field.”
Kim Bernard juried the sculpture. Ms. Bernard exhibits her encaustic and sculptural work nationally. She's received numerous awards, grants and commissions and is a 2005 Piscataqua Artist's Advancement Grant finalist. She has taught at Maine College of Art, UNH, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and NHIA, and is also the founding member of New England Wax. Ms. Bernard’s overall comments on the show: “What was striking and refreshing about the sculptural submissions was the diverse range of abstract and representational work in a variety of materials. Of the 26 entries, 16 were chosen, each one unique in its individual voice. Several pieces would hold their own on a monumental scale, “Trifecta”, “Recycled Dialogue” and “Mr. Lute”, some beg to be multiplied in an installation, “Venus Flytrap” and some demonstrate the artist’s sense of humor, “Silver Angel”.

“pole”
Bronze-Sculpture
“Pole Shift’s” success is attributed to its intrigue from every angle. As the viewer moves around the piece, lines converge and intersect from all 360 degrees. While vaguely reminiscent of antique machinery or instrumentation, it continues to resound as an object unique unto itself.”

“Lies and War”
Mixed Media - Sculpture
“In a non-literal approach “Lies and War” expresses it’s subject matter clearly while not over-riding it’s purely aesthetic concerns of form. One senses the grave darkness among the repeated, overlapping slabs, striking rawness at a gut level.”
