Unbeknownst to most Newburyport residents, our fair town has a rather extended family. “Sister Cities” to be precise. Sister Cities International is a non-profit network that promotes municipal connections and partnerships worldwide. Newburyport enjoys two such foreign relations with Bura, Kenya and the Zelenogorsk, Russia. This April, the Newburyport Art Association (NAA) will host an art exchange with our Russian counterpart, Zelenogorsk.
It can be said that the creation and appreciation of art has been one of the few unifying pursuits across humanity. Every race, creed and culture from the beginning of mankind has sought expression through the medium of art, and such works often serve as an unadulterated prism reflecting the unique perspective of the creator’s world. When that world is a remote Siberian “closed” city (pop. 70,000) established in 1956 by the former Soviet Republic for the primary purpose of refining uranium for Cold War atomic proliferation, then the art born from that environment can’t help but be imbued with an ethos that would be unique, if not entirely foreign to our Northshore residents.
So it is with much anticipation that the NAA welcomes, this April, the arrival of approximately 120 works from residents (professional/student/children) of our Russian sister city: Zelenogorsk. The works will be on display at NAA’s 65 Water Street gallery from April 15th May 4th. A suggested donation $2.00 will be requested at the door. And, a “premiere”, FREE, public reception for this show featuring authentic Russian cuisine will be held Sunday, April 17th from 3-5:00 pm.
