Newburyport Art Association
Members Winter Juried Show 2008 - Part 2
February 8th to March 2nd

Juror: Grant Drumheller, Professor of Art
University of New Hampshire

Juror’s Overall Comments

“The show has a strong preference for landscape, an obvious result of
the beauty of the area. I was surprised not to see more figurative and
still life work, not to mention more drawings. Never the less, the
quality and strength of the membership are in evidence! Keep up the good
work, one and all!”

Mary Alice Arakelian Memorial Award for Best of Show
Artist: Charles Shurcliff
Town: Ipswich, MA
Title: “Room with a View”
Media: Watercolor

A wonderful use of overlapping transparent color and strong effective composition. The contrast of large frontal volumes and the deep space of the triangular tent opening are very spatial. It is all done in a wet shapely brushwork and strong drawing technique. You discover the figure as in a Vuillard

Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation Award for Oil/Acrylic
Artist: Jeanne Pierce
Town: Townsend, MA
Title: “July Afternoon”
Media: Oil

A seamless touch and space. A kind of virtuosic use of close cool gray tones and brushwork, from the front white flowers all the way to the sky. It is beautifully handled.

I sense an artist who doesn’t mistake focus and hard edges for “reality”. The real is found through looking, missing color and putting it down with astonishing sensitivity (and never breaking the fiction of
the space).

Newburyport Five Cent Savings Bank Award for Watercolor
Artist: Marny Williams
Town: Gloucester, MA
Title: “One Clarendon Street”
Media: Watercolor

The Drawing expressed in your work is impressive, as is the size and everyday subject matter. I like the saturation of the color and vibrancy of light areas found through negative shapes.

Newburyport Area Industrial Development Foundation Award for Photography
Artist: Tom Robinson-Cox
Town: Gloucester, MA
Title: “After the Gale”
Media: Photography

A real stunner- with all the shades of brown to blue in the water and rocks. I think the pose of the glowing rainbow against the sunlit building is remarkable. A great record of an ephemeral moment – a truly New England photograph.

Sam Sargent Award for Excellence in Sculpture/Fine Craft
Artist: Sarah Seabury Ward
Town: Newbury, MA
Title: “Nurslings"
Media: Bronze Sculpture

A beautiful grouping, especially in the area around the baby foxes.
The piece has a unity and all over sense of accomplishment worthy of the permanence of bronze.

Laura Coombs Hills Award for Excellence in Mixed Media/Printmaking
Artist: John Strother
Town: Newbury, MA
Title: “Taipai”
Media: Mixed Media

Highly individual and strange in a good way. I would love to see the work unleashed from the frame and the edges grow a little more flexible. The piece looks like it could be bigger and project form the wall more, as well. I think you could involve pattern or girds and study your color choices carefully (thoughtfully) for future ideas.

Mildred Hartson Award for Excellence in Photography
Artist: John B. Watkins
Town: Boston, MA
Title: “Vernal Pool”
Media: Palladium Print

A complex, difficult, and exceedingly ambitious technique to use in this day and age. Congratulations. I enjoy the modesty of the subject and the silvery tones of the print/landscape. Some soft parts but an all over lovely piece.

Honorable Mention
Artist: Susan Sanford
Town: Newburyport, MA
Title: “The Valley at Dusk”
Media: Oil

A consistently wrought and handsome space. Good work.

Honorable Mention
Artist: James Sandman
Town: W. Newbury, Ma
Title: “All Wet”
Media: Photography

A mysterious, amusing, and lovely image.

Honorable Mention
Artist: Ellen Sullivan Taylor
Town: Amesbury, MA
Title: “Vermont Scape”
Media: Oil

A real piece of on–the spot “alla prima” painting. The work has a strong spirit and technique and conveys a real sense of spontaneity.

Honorable Mention
Artist: Jan Roy
Town: Newburyport, MA
Title: “Abdesalm’s Garden”
Media: Acrylic

Very handsome color and with the reduced detail, the abstraction and strength of vision comes through.
