Juror's Overall Comments:
I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to jury the NAA Members Winter Show, Part 1. My admiration for the NAA volunteer corps and staff members is immense. It was quite encouraging to witness this outpouring of community support, demonstrated by the number and variety of awards presented.
It is evident to me that the art of photography is strong and alive in the region. Overall, there are a variety of diverse styles and subject matter represented in this show. I encourage everyone affiliated with the Newburyport Art Association to continue the your great work!

Stutz
Pinhole Photograph
This pinhole photograph is a richly colored, fanciful work, demonstrating a genuine affinity for the nostalgic era of motor cars. The work exhibits a robust balance within the confines of the picture plane, and once again, the quality of the printing is solid.

Shoreline, Joppa Flats
Conte
Shoreline, Joppa Flats is unique for its freedom of
expression. The conte chalk is beautifully handled, creating a wonderful sense of space and ruggedness.
The spontaneous and direct use of mark is refreshing.

Black Water
Woodcut
Black Water is strong, direct and well printed. Through the medium of woodcut, the viewer is immediately engaged in the plight of the swimmers as they struggle in the black flood.

Color Photograph
The photograph by M. J. Benson is an evocative and mysterious expression. The narrative elements in the picture evoke greater meaning due to the unspoken areas of darkness. There is something of the Italian Renaissance in this print.

Welded Steel Sculpture
Mind Search, by John Fleming, is a noble attempt
by the artist to create figurative sculpture using the

Lone Doll #1
Photograph
This is a beautiful print, richly colored and composed.
Through the use of light and shadow, the photographer has endowed this stationary image with the ineffable presence of a live child. Its rich printed surface contributes greatly to this effect.

Kala Gleason
Avril Lavigne
Charcoal Drawing
I was pleased to present the Newburyport Art Association Youth Award to Kala Gleason for her powerful and direct portrait. The drawing is a fine use of chalk, and its free use of mass and tone convey a sense of psychological intensity.
