Members Winter Juried Show - Part 2

February 15 - March 14, 2001
Drawing, printmaking, photography and sculpture

Overall Comments by Chris Enos, Juror
The first thing I look for is a unique vision, something of quality that I haven’t seen many times before. Then I look for images or objects that I return to and want to experience again, pieces that have resonance.

Technical competence and composition must be a given but are not enough to sustain my interest. I look for work that contains particular intelligence, feeling, or visual quality.

"Untitled Diptych"

The reason I picked this diptych is because I wanted to see it over and over again. Each time I experienced more than the last. At first it has the visual movement from frame to frame, then it took on a life of its own.

It speaks to the ability of photography to capture a moment in time. Not only the moment in time that it was taken, but a moment in childhood that seems so carefree, alive and all too short.

Laura Coombs Hills Memorial Award for Excellence

"Old Tree"

As I looked around the room full of images, I kept returning to this tree. It has a presence. It seems to exist not only as a drawing but as an object with a life of its own.

"Trees on the Marsh"

We all see something different. We see more or less, in or out of focus at any given moment. This image seems to capture one of those moments in between.

Drawing #3

This drawing suggests the power of natural objects. It reminds me to take time and look closely. It moves, struggles, and tries to fit in, to survive.

"Nereid"

The expression is intriguing. The eyes shut thinking of what? The shell for hair suggests a connection with nature. Placed so high on a pedestal . . . hers or yours?

"219 Arctic Chromatic"

There’s nothing quite like documentary photography when what is documented is such a visual treat. We seem to live in such a wild wacky world. Do you think the people who inhabit these homes see them that way?

Award for General Excellence
Carol Westcott

"Condor Spirit Mask"

I just like it. It’s funny and tough at the same time. What is it thinking?
