Newburyport Art Association
Members Fall Juried Show

The Newburyport Art Association presents our 7th Annual Fall Member’s Juried Show featuring Painting, Mixed Media, Fine Crafts, Drawing and Printmaking.

September 24 - October 24, 2004

Our Juror, Karen Burgess Smith is the Director of the Lamont Gallery, at Phillips Exeter Academy, in Exeter, NH. She was the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, in Manchester, NH and for many years, the Director of the Art Center in Hargate at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH. While at St. Paul’s, Smith curated over 50 exhibitions, and organized events such as “Towards 2000: Museums in the Next Century,” a symposium featuring national leaders in the museum field. A long time art educator, as well as an award-winning television producer, Smith was appointed to the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts in 2004.

Juror's Overall Comments on the Show:
I was pleased and surprised by the quantity and quality of the work submitted by the Association members. Land and water are clearly important themes to artists in the region and the impact of New England light on both. Styles and approaches ranged from the realist to abstract, from “up and coming” to established artists. I was also impressed with the sheer variety of the work, with a tall, beautifully crafted table, sitting next to a bold, contemporary landscape, across from a dramatic, large-scale watercolor.
