Jan Roy
Oil, Silkscreen, Pastel
Sargent and Hills Galleries
Reception: Thursday, May 22 from 6-9 PM

For 25 years Jan worked in the silk-screen medium designing and printing posters for cultural organizations. She also maintained a card company named Salt Marsh Graphics. Her first commission was from the Portland Symphony Orchestra in 1979. This led to her producing more than 40 posters in the next 20 years. Some of the organizations she worked with were the Massachusetts Horticultural Society (for which she did an annual poster from 1982-2000), the Nature Conservancy, Sarah Caldwell's Opera New England, The Grand Teton Music Festival, and The New England Conservatory. Her very successful Brooklyn Bridge Centennial poster crystallized attention on her talent, resulting in one-man shows in Rome, Italy and Paris, France.

Jan turned her attention to pastels and oil painting 3 years ago. Not unlike her prints, she still finds shape and color most important in her work, but the new medium allows more freedom in dealing with the subtleties of light, and its nuance in varied landscapes.
