Lisa Reinke
"Notions"
Hills Gallery
Media: Oil
Reception: Friday, April 7th, 7-9pm

Lisa Reinke from Barrington, New Hampshire, is known for her stylized oil portraits which are full of color and life.  Lisa will be the featured artist from April 6 - April 12, 2006 at the Newburyport Art Association.   Her show is called "Notions" and Lisa will display a collection of oil paintings that fused with random thoughts and notions during the creative process.  She is inspired by the human face and explores how we seek it out and then emotionally respond to its image.  If you frequent the Newburyport Art Association, you have likely seen her powerful paintings nestled amongst the other art.  Her painting "Gravity Well" won best of show at the 7th Annual Regional Juried Show at NAA.  This is an exciting opportunity to see a collection of her works and get a feel for Lisa's expressionistic style and themes.

Gravity Well

The notions behind Lisa's paintings can be silly, relevant, personal and universal.  The paintings often feature Lisa's specialty, the human face, as a vehicle for these ideas.  Sometimes the notions push her subject matter towards the abstract end of the art spectrum.  For example, "Lesser Self" is a painting based on the notion that sometimes our lives become so routine that we mentally lessen the person standing next to us. This painting visualizes that person as an outline with indistinct features that are barely human or contextual.  To Lisa "This is a human foible.  We all do this sometimes.  It struck home for me after grocery shopping one day.  I realized I had interacted with dozens of people, but could recall none of them.  I became the task, a lesser version of myself.  This silly foible can turn into some of humanity's cruelest traits and crimes.  This painting is a yarn around my finger to never forget that this seed lives within me and may blind me in times of crisis."

Lesser Self

"Meanwhile" is a fun painting of a young man with a comic book feel. The artist was thinking "about walking amongst people, the rhythmic swaying and detouring, and the proximity to another life being lived at same time as your own."

Meanwhile

Each of the painting in the show have similar notions behind them and Lisa is looking forward to sharing them and learning what kind of notions they might stir in you.  During the show, Lisa Reinke will be using the Hills Gallery at NAA as her studio.  She will be painting, doing demonstrations and be available for inquiries.  The opening reception is April 7th, 2006 from 7-9 pm.
