Artists Peggy Omer and Terry Slater exhibit new artwork in their show DESTINATION Newburyport. Slater and Omer both “choose color and composition that have a lightness and airiness to it: sometimes subtle yet glowing color.” Their artistic paths converge in Newburyport after unknowingly crossing paths; they both lived in New York and on California’s Monterey Peninsula.
Peggy Omer grew up north of Buffalo, New York. She studied oils, acrylic, and water-based mediums at the New School of Art in Toronto, Canada; The School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Omer’s new artwork in DESTINATION NEWBURYPORT includes Massachusetts North Shore sea/landscapes, Boston Red Sox drawings, Pike’s Place Poppies, and recent seascapes of Alaska and British Columbia. She lived and painted on California’s Monterey Peninsula from 1982 to 2002. DESTINATION NEWBURYPORT will also include watercolors inspired by the Pacific coastline and Big Sur redwoods, flora and wildlife.
In 2005 and 2006 Omer had shows in the Laura Coombs Hills Gallery at the Newburyport Art Association and exhibits at Art on Bartlett in Newburyport. She is a member of the Newburyport Art Association and the North Shore Art Association. In California she exhibited at the Evans Gallery in Carmel; Henry Miller Library in Big Sur; and other juried shows in Seaside, Monterey and Pacific Grove where she won awards for her work.
Omer has paintings in private collections across the country and abroad. She worked as a computer specialist in Monterey, California for many years and now resides in Amesbury.
Terry Slater was born in Carmel, California and grew up in Huntington, New York. She graduated from Southampton College, NY in 1984 with a B.F.A. After graduation she lived and worked as a graphic designer in New York City while she continued her studies at the School of Visual Arts and the New School.
After working in graphic design and illustration for print and apparel in New York and Massachusetts, she has gone back to her fine arts roots. She works in mixed media, inspired by the beautiful coast of Massachusetts North Shore where she now lives. Slater works mixed media into her land/seascapes and still life using sandpaper, charcoal and pastels, on paper, wood panel and clay board.
Slater is a member of the Marblehead Arts Association, Salem Arts Association, Lynn Arts Association and the Newburyport Art Association. She is currently the Graphic Design & Communications Specialist at Montserrat College of Art and resides in Beverly, MA.
