Jurors Statement:
Once again, we salute the staff and volunteers of the Newburyport Art Association for their remarkable commitment to the arts and artists in our community. They are well organzied and alway upbeat and helpful, making our job a true pleasure.
We continue to be impressed with the body of outstanding artwork presented to us for selection. It is always difficult to narrow down the work submitted for inclusion in any exhibit. The quality and array of work was inspiring.
We are honored to be asked to participate as jurors in this outstanding show and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We wish only the best of luck to all of the artists including those individuals not selected for this exhibition and encourage them to continue their pursuit in the arts.

Work in Photography

Hues of Vinalhaven - Vinalhaven Harbor, ME, by Jay McCarthy
This piece should persuade those "doubters" that photography is a true art form. We were taken with the abstraction of the imagery, we didnt know what it was and it didn't really matter. The composition was well balanced with a soothing and layered palette reminiscent of an Italian fresco. The Klimt-esque quality at the lower-left portion of the image and sense of layered textures all contribute to our love for this outstanding piece of art. We applaud the artist's wonderful ability to find and masterfully capture art and beauty in the most unlikely of places.
Mary Alice Arakelian Memorial Award
for Work in Acrylic

Sonflower Blooms, by Sara Demrow Dent
Sarah’s unique style combines a vibrancy of colors and lush shapes with a clean, elegant execution of the subject. She has created a unique niche integrating personal poetry into the body of her work, which creates a delicate graphite outline of the subject. Her work is always recognizable and uplifting.
Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank Award
for Work in Mixed Media

Tree-O, by Ryan Kelley
This piece exhibits energy and motion that has been achieved with a creative use and understanding of the materials. From the delicate root system grounded on rock to the strength of the twisting trunk with wind-blown branches. Unique, interesting, and well done.
Institution for Savings Award
for Work in Pastel

Garlics, by Noriko Fox
Incredible control of the medium capturing the paper-like quality of the garlic, the execution of the shadows, and the over-all composition. It is hard to believe that pastel can also be such a crisp medium. Wonderfully executed.
H. Patterson Hale, Jr. Charitable Foundation Award
for Work in Photography

Hues of Vinalhaven- Vinalhaven Harbor, ME, by Jay McCarthy
We love this! It transcends the medium- a beautiful aesthetic, revealing the beauty of the often time unnoticed artifacts of our daily lives. Sumptuous palette.
Strem Chemicals, Inc. Award
for Work in Fine Craft

City Cycling, by Janice Mae Jones
Contemporary and urban. A wonderful, imaginative use of textiles. Artfully arranged with fabulous colors and shapes. Beautifully composed and well executed.
Newburyport Art Association Honorable Mention Award
for Work in Acryclic

Singing the Blues, by Wendy Cole
A Chagall palette with an intriguing use of impasto, uncommonly achieved through acrylics, creating marvelous texture and depth.
Newburyport Art Association Honorable Mention Award
for Work in Mixed Media

Funky Teapot, by Merry Beninato
Extraordinary control of dyes on silk. We love that she was able to capture the glaze of ceramics, the translucency of glass and the solid nature of carrots and grapes. Excellent composition, bold, colorful and “funky.”
Newburyport Art Association Honorable Mention Award
for Work in Pastel

Seasonal Vacancy, by Susan Kneeland
A wonderful perspective and a fabulous subject matter- it’s great to see an urban landscape done in pastel, a departure from the typical pastel landscape. Lovely, moody, and reflective nature of the wet road. Fantastic composition.
Newburyport Art Association Honorable Mention Award
for Work in Photography

Roll, by Jack Fowler
Outstanding composition and balance. To see the beauty in something that would be invisible to many, the photographer has turned the image into a 21st century “fresco.”
Newburyport Art Association Honorable Mention Award
for Work in Fine Craft
Island Sunset, by Douglas W. Johnson
