The Newburyport Art Association

In 1948, Sam Sargent, Laura Coombs Hills and a group of regional artists dedicated to promoting the arts while encouraging emerging artists founded the Newburyport Art Association. Today, incorporated as a nonprofit organization, the NAA maintains its rich history and integrity by serving artists and friends of the visual arts from Boston to southern Maine. Membership is open to all levels of artists throughout the region, and the NAA welcomes everyone to join with the over 400 members of NAA.

The NAA resides in a charming, historic c1800 waterfront building overlooking Newburyport harbor. The building is within easy walking distance from Market Square in scenic downtown Newburyport along Water Street.

The Mission of NAA:
  • To support artists by exhibiting and promoting their work.
  • To promote understanding, awareness and skills in the visual arts.
  • To involve the community through outreach and education.

The Association is open year round, hosting a full calendar of exhibitions and events. The work of artists exhibiting at the gallery is diverse in style, images and media –from traditional watercolor to modern digital imagery to poetry. Established and emerging artists are presented in open, juried and invitational shows. Individuals and small group shows are also encouraged throughout each year. Annually, NAA displays more than 3,000 works of art, and visitors are able to explore artistic interpretation and expression over a larger collection of work. All exhibitions are open to the public, free of charge. The Gallery Gift Shop also displays the work of member artists and is a perfect place to choose a gift or an objet d’art from a selection of small paintings, prints and fine craft items.

NAA’s commitment to its founding mission of encouraging emerging artists is supported by the many educational opportunities offered through workshops, classes and special programs. Additionally, the NAA extends its involvement by working with local schools to develop youth and children’s creative arts programs. The culmination of this collaborative effort is an annual "Budding Artist" exhibition . The works of many young artists are exhibited with prizes awarded to works selected by a judge. As another part of its youth program, NAA awards a scholarship to an outstanding graduating senior art student at Newburyport High School.

As part of its support of artistic diversity and creativity, NAA extends sponsorship to the popular Powow River Poets. Monthly poetry readings that feature an Open Mic are are held in the gallery, and all are welcomed to attend.

We invite you to visit our gallery, and enjoy the work of regional artists!
