Featured Interest Groups (FIGs)

The NAA provides a gathering place for artists interested in meeting with other artists working in particular mediums. Featured Interest Groups (FIGs) are sometimes open to non-NAA members, but in order to participate in the majority of exhibitions held at Newburyport Art, artists will need to be current members of the NAA. Please keep in mind that each Featured Interest Group has developed its own mission & guidelines regarding participation, membership, and exhibition opportunities.

Muriel Angelil | Tumbling Houses No. 4

AAGNE was founded with a dual mission: to support, encourage and promote abstract and non-traditional artists; and to educate the public about their work. The artists of AAGNE work in a variety of media, approaches, and styles, but are brought together by a common interest: a fascination and passion for the abstract elements in all art, for Abstract art, and art of abstraction. AAGNE presents several shows each year.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The Newburyport Art Association Photography Interest Group (better known as PhIG) is a group of approximately 80 enthusiasts living in and around the Greater Newburyport area. Our group is comprised of people from all walks of life, some young and some older, some extremely accomplished and others just starting out. All of us with the same focus – an intense love of the art and practice of photography and a great interest in sharing it.

WATERCOLOR

The NAA Watercolor Interest Group is a community of artists that share their love for watercolor and seek to provide opportunities to learn, paint and exhibit together. The group meets monthly to share, critique, and support members’ creative work. Members range from professional artists to novice painters. Members often volunteer to facilitate meetings and share things they have learned through workshops or individual exploration. Often there is a painting theme or challenge of the month. During warmer weather interested members meet to paint en Plein Air.

A weekly schedule is posted for meet ups on our Facebook page and a group e-mail list. The group also has a public Instagram account (@watercolor_interest_group).

Actively participating group members exhibit in an annual Watercolor Interest Group show at NAA.

BAND OF BRUSHES

The Band of Brushes is a group of artists who paint together en plein air (a French expression meaning painting outdoors). These artists share a love of nature and paint in oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic. The group meets on Tuesdays from April through October, and paints outdoors at beautiful North Shore and seacoast locations.

NEWBURYPORT TEN

The “Newburyport Ten” had its roots in the “Plein Air Interest Group” at the Newburyport Art Association. It was originally a watercolor group founded by Carol Reynolds and her mother Marie Crone. The group meets outdoors once a week to work in a variety of mediums, to support each other, critique, and have lunch.

While the Ten exhibit as a group, participation in the Thursday morning sessions is open and flexible; the group invites other painters to join them at their location to encourage more people to explore the challenges and rewards of Plein Air painting. The group traditionally has had an annual exhibition at the NAA and also pursues their own opportunities to show at various galleries and exhibits. Over the years the group has collaborated for local shows in unique settings, including the Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm in Newbury MA, Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA, and the Senior Community Center in Newburyport.
